And in a twist of epic, Dean-mind-blowing proportions, a member of School of Fish has officially joined Nine Inch Nails.

"MeganRae: How did the departure of Alex Carapetis/ addition of Josh Freese come about?
trent_reznor: Josh is the RIGHT drummer for this band. It took us a while to figure that out, but now we know."

Both Trent and Josh Clayton-Felt figured out the same thing, years and an entire soundscape apart. I'll be over here picking my brain up off the floor if you need me...

UPDATE: Some more chat 'script because it was funny. JOSH IS BACK (said in best Schmee voice from "Hook").</b>

"Impure: Josh, with all the artists you have worked with, I would imagine there is an array of influences you get with the way you approach each thing you work on. How would you say that working closely with so many people has influenced you?
josh_freese: It's inspiring to work with so many great artists. It's a fucking trip working w NIN one day and then someone I grew up loving like Devo or Paul Westerberg the next.

josh_freese: Don't be weird about it.

josh_freese: Everybody Remember! Don't be fucking weird about it!

rob_sheridan: That's it for the chat tonight everybody. There will be a complete transcript up on The Spiral soon.

josh_freese: E=mc hammer 2

rob_sheridan: That is, if Josh ever logs off.

josh_freese: never! -

rob_sheridan: Josh. Time to go play drums.

josh_freese: I'm fucking staying here and don't be weird about it!

rob_sheridan: Okay, goodnight everyone."

Damn! That is so fucking awesome. I can't imagine how much you're freaking out about it. Actually, I can, and I that's why I think it's so awesome.

I am so Warner-Bro's cartoon, flags out of the ears, cuckoo clock mouth, eyes a-oo-ga and all about it.

It just makes no practical, realistic sense that this should happen, and yet cosmically it somehow makes perfect sense (or at least cosmically validates so much I thought was on-the-fly-love-for-music back in the day).

I mean, what's next- John S. Hall fronting K's Choice*? An Edward Albee play directed by Terry Gilliam, starring Steve Spurrier?

* Actually, this whole Freese-joining-Nails thing does make me feel, in a much larger way tho, the same giddyness as the initial information about Oysterhead. For me it was more Claypool and Copeland that I was excited about, but it was more an acknowledgment that what I liked about the two was so spot on that they'd find eachother.

weird...I never knew that he was in School of Fish. Or maybe I did, and just forgot. I can't imagine how I could have forgotten...it's not like he's drummed for a lot of people or anything.

I was waiting for Alex Canhardlyplaymostofthebackcatalogpetis to get the boot. Freese is, like, good and stuff.

Oh yeah.... and what's cool is that he wasn't just School's studio drummer. After the tour with Westerberg where School opened, Josh joined Josh as an actual member of the band- toured, recorded Human Cannonball and toured for awhile more before the band imploded with Ward's departure. He stayed one of Clayton-Felt's close friends too, appearing at the benefit concerts after his death and keeping up with his family.

What's cool is that he's like the ultimate scab drummer, but he's only actually joined a handful of bands (Vandals, Devo, Circle, Fish & NIN now among them) and in the period he was in FIsh it was before he became this sought-after studio marvel.

And yes, AlexIdidn'treadthememowheretheysaidnottowearneonshirtsCraphandiness I'm sure can get a good job elsewhere waiting tables.
